Trading pairs
Base and quote
Crypto is traded in pairs, just like currencies. In BTC/USDT, BTC is the base and USDT is the quote: the price is how many USDT one bitcoin costs. Buying the pair means buying BTC with USDT.
Stablecoins as the quote
Most pairs are quoted in stablecoins: tokens built to stay at $1, like USDT (Tether) and USDC. That makes BTC/USDT work almost like BTC/USD.
Coin-to-coin pairs
Some pairs are priced in another coin. ETH/BTC shows how many bitcoin one ether costs. If ETH/BTC rises, ether is doing better than bitcoin, even if both fell in dollars.
